The Distinction That Matters: Scanner Operator vs. Security Engineer

A scanner operator runs tools, forwards findings, and waits for developers to fix them. A security engineer understands the application, finds vulnerabilities tools miss, designs preventive architecture, builds automation, and enables developers to write secure code. The scanner operator caps at IC3. The security engineer starts at IC3 and scales.

Code review ability is the single highest-signal technical indicator for AppSec engineers. A candidate who can find subtle vulnerabilities through code review — authorization issues, business logic flaws, cross-service vulnerabilities that scanners miss — is operating at a fundamentally higher level than one who relies on tool output.
