What "Senior" Means in Backend

A Senior Backend Engineer (IC4) independently designs and delivers multi-component systems, mentors junior engineers, and drives technical decisions within their team. They own production. They write SQL that doesn't break under load. They reason about trade-offs without supervision. They know when to use a message queue and when to just write to the database.
 

A Staff Backend Engineer (IC5) sets technical direction across multiple teams, solves cross-cutting architectural problems, and multiplies the output of other engineers. They've made irreversible infrastructure decisions and lived with the consequences. A Principal Backend Engineer (IC6) defines technical strategy for a business unit and translates business constraints into architectural roadmaps.
 

Years of experience is not the signal. Scope of ownership is.


How Wizhire Evaluates Backend Engineers

Every shortlisted Backend Engineer is screened on:

  • Technical Depth: language mastery (Python, Go, Java, TypeScript, Rust — primary and secondary), advanced SQL and data layer fluency, system-level understanding of concurrency and distributed behavior

  • System Design: ability to design distributed systems end-to-end with appropriate questioning, trade-off reasoning about storage choices, reasoning about failure modes and operational cost

  • Domain Knowledge: understanding of their primary language's runtime behavior, database internals relevant to their work, infrastructure and DevOps working knowledge

  • Ownership: evidence of taking projects from problem statement to production independently, on-call ownership, incident response leadership

Calibration happens against Wizhire's published Backend Engineering leveling rubrics — the same rubrics used to define every screen.
