What Separates Data Engineering Levels
SQL mastery is the highest-signal technical indicator at every level. A candidate who writes elegant, correct, performant SQL but has limited framework experience is more likely to succeed than one who knows every tool but writes broken SQL. SQL fluency is non-negotiable at IC3+.
Data modeling separates levels more cleanly than tooling. An IC3 who can design a correct dimensional model independently operates closer to IC4. An IC4 who cannot define the grain of a fact table operates closer to IC3.

"I used Spark" is the most common false signal. Probe for: what they optimized (shuffle reduction, partition tuning, memory management), what they debugged (OOM errors, skewed joins, driver bottlenecks), and what they decided (when to use Spark vs. warehouse-native transforms).
