DevOps is the delivery pipeline and infrastructure discipline: CI/CD design, infrastructure-as-code, container orchestration, environment management, and the tooling that gets code from a developer's machine to production safely and repeatably.
 

The Key Calibration: Developer Empathy

The defining characteristic of DevOps vs. ops: DevOps engineers design for developer productivity. Pipelines should have fast feedback loops. Infrastructure should be self-service. Error messages should help developers fix problems. If developers are filing tickets to get infrastructure, the DevOps engineer has not done their job.

"I manage the Kubernetes cluster" is uninformative. Probe for what they've designed, what they've debugged, and what they've decided. Running kubectl apply is IC2 work. Designing and operating the cluster is IC4 work.
 

Infrastructure-as-code quality is the clearest code quality signal for DevOps. Their Terraform is reviewed with the same rigor as application code.
