The Distinction That Matters: Research ML vs. ML Engineering

A candidate with strong modeling skills but no production experience — no serving, no monitoring, no feature stores, no CI/CD for models — caps at IC3 regardless of their publication record. ML Engineering at IC4 and above is about building systems that deliver sustained business value from ML in production. Training the best model on a static dataset is not the job.

Senior ML Engineers (IC4) own the full model lifecycle: problem formulation through deployment, monitoring, and iteration. Staff ML Engineers (IC5) have built shared ML infrastructure that other engineers and data scientists use — feature engineering libraries, training frameworks, evaluation pipelines.
