The platform's customer is the internal developer. Success is measured by developer productivity and adoption — not by features shipped.
 
The Signal That Matters Most
Developer empathy is the single most important non-technical signal for platform engineers. A candidate who has talked to developers, observed their workflows, and measured their friction is operating at a fundamentally higher level than one who designs from the infrastructure perspective. A platform nobody uses is a failed project regardless of its technical quality. Probe for voluntary adoption rates, developer satisfaction, and what changed when developers didn't adopt the first version.

Platform engineering doesn't exist below ~30 engineers. A candidate claiming platform engineering experience at a 10-person company is describing DevOps work. Calibrate accordingly.
